No, the 'Please append correct root=' bit is from the kernel trying to 
mount the root filesystem ROso it can pass off to init.  If you're using 
a USB stick odds are it's not /dev/hda1 but probably /dev/sda1 or in 
some funky directory in /dev depending on the kernel rev and what kind 
of /dev you're running.  You'll have to make sure the USB drivers are 
compiled into the kernel or run a initrd.
