Good question that I'd like to know myself.
Being a TCP/IP novice I have questions like:
Let's say you set up the embedded system with DHCP but the device is faceless.
Let's also say that there are several of these systems on the network and that
it's all running on 802.11. Sure, the router would handle assigning IP
addresses but how would a master control PC be able to tell which embedded
system is which? Do you try to ping every address in the subnet? What if
physical location is relevant? Seems like fixed IP addresses are the only way
to resolve this but what if you turn on two devices with the same IP address?
Are they now unreachable until you change one?
How does the Parrot Drone work? How does the iOS app go about finding the
drone's address?
I have a system set up such that the main application changes the default IP
address to a user-defined one when it launches and changes it back to a default
when the app quits. That way I always have the ability to log into the system.
