I did check the disk usage when this problem occurs ( had to reset the
box even to do that as 'df' is hanging too). / is 80% occupied and the
2G SD card is only 7% occupied. So it doesn't look like a space issue -
of course I'd have to be careful about it.
I've replaced the SD card with another one and the problem seems to be
gone (for now). If this is indeed a SD card issue, then the system is
not very reliable in this regard: it's only been in use for a few weeks.
And it's meant to be for month.
