Check out the file /etc/nsswitch.conf
Here's mine...

 # /etc/nsswitch.conf
 #
 #

 passwd: files
 group: files

 hosts: files dns
 #hosts: files
 networks: files

As you can see I have a host line that says only use the /etc/hosts file,
not dns. I have that there for when I'm working without internet access.
Make sure all the hosts you interract with have entries in /etc/hosts
