Thanks Jason.

I do not think the problem is with /etc/samba/smbd.conf which has started out 
very simple, as shown below. It is something else totally obvious ..but only in 
hindsight.

SWAT is supposed to make it easier to configure smbd.conf. The problem is, it 
appears to be more difficult to install and set up SWAT than it is to configure 
smbd.conf.

smbd.conf:

[global]
   dns proxy = no
   server string = Samba Server
   security = share
   socket options = TCP_NODELAY
   workgroup = WORKGROUP

[home]
   comment = Home
   path = /home
   public = yes
   writable = no
   printable = no

[tmp]
   comment = Temporary file space
   path = /tmp
   read only = no
   public = yes
