I'm using ttyS1 on ts7800 and don't have this problem. It might some 
setting value. I'd suggest to have a look at the source code of picocom. 
Also there are free serial programming guides out there you might want 
to read:
1. "Serial Programming Guide for POSIX Operating Systems"
2. "Serial Programming" from wikibooks
