I had similar difficulties. I doubt you are doing anything wrong.
I was probably using picocom instead of minicom, but I think the default window
to get the character in is small. I basically just kept trying it until it
worked.
You should make sure minicom isn't buffering up the chars somehow.
Failing that, something on the order of
while(1) do : echo '^c' > /dev/ttyXX
ought to work. (after fixing the syntax :)
I switched to fastboot shortly afterward, so not an issue for me anymore. If
you are staying with redboot, I think (once you get control of RedBoot) you can
open the window for listening for the escape character. Of course, it will
increase your normal boot time.
