It is completely unrelated. :-)
This one is now part of the CAN implementation by the SocketCAN[1]
project that has been included in the mainline Linux since about
2.6.25, in Apr 2008.

The main difference is that the SocketCAN implementation uses the
sockets interface. One advantage is that sockets are the de facto
standard of network API, which means writing a program that uses CAN
is this way very similar to writing a program that uses, say, UDP/IP.
Another advantage is that the SocketCAN implementation is tightly
integrated in the Linux network subsystem, which should make it faster
and easily extendable for higher layer CAN protocols... I presume. :-)
