Are you sure it's too high?  Almost everything out there will run on a 
400kHz i2c clock...  Do you have a logic analyzer that can do i2c decode 
or a i2c protocol analyzer?  I had a real pain of a time getting i2c to 
work when I first started playing with it and thankfully got my hands on 
a protocol analyzer which made understanding what messages I had to send 
and how a lot easier.
