1) Try using a USB cable that does NOT supply power and use an external power supply
 
If that clears it up you may have a ground loop somwhere.
 
2) look on the internet about kernel debugging. Usually this means rebuild ing the kernel and inserting printks

You could also try using a powered USB hub to attach the wifi & thumbdrive, before you go start modifying the hardware.
