My cctl utility can control this from user space.

Not that I know. Different LCDs have different, or no, back lighting 
arrangements. It shouldn't be difficult to hook a transistor or mosfet up 
if you have a spare I/O bit somewhere. I tend to use an LCD without 
backlighting.
