This is an FAQ. Look in the file /etc/inittab for a line like...

lgn0:12345:respawn:/sbin/getty -L 115200 ttyAM0

init has started getty on the line. Connect it out thus

#lgn0:12345:respawn:/sbin/getty -L 115200 ttyAM0

and then do

  # init -1 1

to tell init to reread the inittab file.
