I am embarrassed to say that was it; works perfectly now.

Although, I am slightly confused:

There is an SPI flash chip as well as a NOR/NAND flash chip on this little 
board? The SPI is used only for bootloading and pivoting and the NOR/SD/USB is 
used for the rootfs?
