I've made my own splash screen and have an application to generate it,
and also take advantage of some TS code.
But if you already have your splash image (must be correct size and 
gzipped img file)
1. mount initial root (what comes up in fastboot as ramdisk)
either of /dev/tssdcarda3 (sdcard) or /dev/mtdblock2 (on board)
2. replace warmup.gz with your new one.
