What they said, plus for a *very* quick and painless way to play with linux on your desktop without fear of destroying all your data or learning how to multiboot, download and burn a Linux LiveCD - that will allow you to boot into Linux for learning purposes without having to install it. Another alternative is to create a virtual machine with something like VMWare, which well let you run a copy of linux in a window, again without having to multiboot. It can be very slick.
