That did it thanks! Couple notes for anyone who finds this in a search:
-The createmtdroot scrpit is in /lbin, and that is basically what it does
(couple other things after copying that I went ahead and did not sure how
necessary they are)
-The eraseall command is only available on the initrd on the sdcard, not the mtd
