After looking at this further I see how the polarity reverse occurred.
The connector was of the standard types for most devices, only I had
left the female connector outside the housing until I finalised where
it would be mounted.
I realised that if I slipped I might create a brief short, but not
reverse of polarity.
The board is pretty much toast, so looks like TS has some more business :)
Next time I'm getting a connector that is somewhat more difficult to
reverse the polarity of. Read impossible.
