Being new to the mac, I just connected an external reader to a usb port, and connected that usb port to vmware fusion, where I run debian (actually the same image I used to run from windows using vmware.  For me that is the best solution for now.  It is tempting to try to port everything to mac native, but really why?  The cross compilers... are supported on linux, which works well under emulation.
