jamvm works fine.

You need to set the classpath

export CLASSPATH=./


then jamvm hellojava

You're using apt-get wrong. Apt-get takes (install LOGICALNAME) or a
whole slew of other things. What you want is
dpkg -i (filename)

Also, out of pure curiosity, does the TS box have a connection to the
net? If so, sounds like you need to make sure you can ping
ftp.us.debian.org
