That is exactly what I described right down to 10k series resistors to 
current limit in the case of a short between columns.  As I said in my 
last message with some careful diode placement you could get away from 
the multiple column problem but that's honestly not something I'm 
prepared to describe on a mailing list when it's out on the Internet to 
be found :)
