$40 is a bit high for a serial adapter, but probably not for a Belkin one.  I 
bought a TRENDnet adapter (TU-S9 is the model) for under $20 and it says it is 
compatible with all of the Windows OSes as well as Mac OS 10.1 through 10.4.  I 
haven't tried it on my Mac yet (just upgraded to 10.6) but I would imagine it 
will work just fine.
