Follow up:

I have build python from source on the TS7260
make worked, but make install did not,
however, it seems that I don't need anything that make install makes.
python works fine, and I can import all the modules I need
import os
import sys
import time
etc.
and after installing pyserial
import serial

my TS-SER4 still isn't working yet though...
