The easiest way I've found to get the debian lenny thing going is to extract it 
to a nfs share and troubleshoot the boot process that way.

About the question if a new kernel is needed for ts debian lenny, the anwser is 
no.  I boot the ts debian lenny distribution with the stock 7390 kernel.

Another troubleshooting tip is to boot to the fastboot environment and see if 
you can mount and fsck the sdcard partition manually.
