It depends on many things. The simplest way is downloading and installing 
latest QT-embedded and try it. It has some demos/examples, so you can try it 
before writing one line of code.
If you choose it, you'll see it's very easy to use, so you may save development 
time.
Sure there are other solutions, but, certainly, none easier.

To install GTK/DirectFB you'll spend a week, or more, since it's not 
cross-compilable, and there are many library dependencies.

You can use just DirectFB, it's easier to install, but more difficult to 
develop.

Another important thing is using newer kernel version (2.6) and an armel/lenny. 
It improved significantly my program speed.
