you can also use the write command

int fd = open("/dev/ttyAM0", O_RDWR | O_NOCTTY | O_NDELAY);
/* set baud rate etc. here */
write(fd, text, strlen(text));

Before you can access memory directly you need to use mmap to gain access to that section of memory. I'm not sure if the outb function does this or assumes you've already done so.
