Hi Everyone,

I'm just starting down the path of working with a 7200 for the first of what is shaping up to be many projects on this system.

These things ROCK! but I digress...

I've configured my 7200 to boot to the CF card with Debian installed.  That works fine.  I've configured SSH, FTP, PHP, EIEO... and everything is working well.  I'm preparing to actually work on my source code, but it occurred to me that one of the things I'm going to have to do is create more CF cards when I'm ready to deploy.

I have access to several Slackware Linux systems that I've setup, but they are inconvenient (and I'm beginning to like Debian better!)

Since the 7200 has two spiffy USB ports on it already, and USB support already in the kernel, I was thinking that I should be able to plug in a USB card reader, stuff blank CF cards in it, and do the formatting and such that way.  I'm sure I can load Debian into the onboard flash and then just use the onboard card reader, but I'm trying to avoid that for several reasons, one of which is that once the 7200 is in its case, I have to take it apart to get to the onboard card reader.

When I plug in the USB card reader (a 16 in one multi unit), the device is recognized immediately.  That unfortunately is as far as I get.  I know that I should be able to mount the new CF card and such, but I can't seem to find out what device it is (or is going to be).  And I suspect that this is probably because things aren't quite configured correctly.  I've been following this tutorial:

http://www.cs.sfu.ca/~ggbaker/personal/cf-linux

Which among other things had me install sg-utils to manage the SCSI aspects of things.  The install went fine, but I'm not getting the scan results that the tutorial suggests.

For example, they suggest running "sg_scan -i" which should give me a list of devices, one of which should be the new flash card.  When I first ran it, I got nothing for a result.  Now I'm getting the message: "Note: /etc/modules.conf is more recent than /lib/modules/2.4.26-ts11/modules.dep"  This seems to have occurred after I fooled around with /etc/modules.conf to try to add the option statement suggested in the tutorial: "options scsi_mod max_scsi_luns=8".  Looking at the messages after a reboot, this option seems to have been invalid and thus ignored, and I've removed it, but I'm still getting the "more recent" message.  I'm not sure how to make that go away (and perhaps it doesn't matter).

All of this was prompted by noticing that sg_map (again from the tutorial) found the onboard CF, but not the external plugged in CF and looking at the messages it looked like it wasn't scanning all luns, which is what prompted trying to adjust max luns somehow.  Here's the output of sg_map:

-------------------------
Note the rash of "more recent" messages...

So, the questions are:
- Has anyone else done this?
- Suggestions on where to go from here?  Do I need to figure out how to set max luns or am I barking up the wrong tree
- The ultimate goal here is to be able to format and load CF cards with the Debian distro for the 7200, hopefully also with the other stuff (apache, SSH etc) already configured so I can just plug them into new 7200s and go.  Is there a better way than what I'm attempting?

Thanks for your patience on the long message.  Any suggestions and feedback are welcome.

Steve
