Seems your initrd wasnt loaded by the bootloader... Do you have an initrd on 
your $bootdevice? To start with the new kernel, I used the dd image from TS 
with a debian root fs and initrd...
Make sure you have CONFIG_BLK_DEV_RAM and CONFIG_BLK_DEV_INITRD selected.
Also note that 2.6.28 doesn't support your nand at all! This means your kernel 
cant boot the root fs from nand...
