Can you not just dd it off the partition after the kernel is booted
and grab it then?  I get 3 MTD partitions (2.6 kernel though):

Creating 3 MTD partitions on "NAND 128MiB 3,3V 8-bit":
0x00000000-0x00020000 : "TS-BOOTROM"
0x00020000-0x07d20000 : "Linux"
0x07d20000-0x08000000 : "RedBoot"

(This is nand-2k, smaller blocksize would have different locations)
