Hi, I had the same problem a little time ago.

Format usssing the dd command like you know.

if running a debian linux distro (eg. ubuntu) run:

sudo apt-get install jfstools gparted

Then open GParted (the graphical program), select the usb card
(/dev/mmcblock0  or /dev/sdc for example. Then select the JFS
partition, right click unmount, and finally right click resize.

That should be all.
