Thanks!  That solved my problem.  Now network logins (both telnet and
ssh) work and I can login to the console with non-root accounts, too.

Now, if I can only figure out how to get the ncurses development
package installed (so I can compile our app) I'll be golden, but
that's another thread for after I've given up.
