This is a follow up to my previous message.
I figured out how to get PuTTY to leave the window open so that I
could capture what ssh is telling me (telnet still tells me nothing).
Here's what I see:
login as: steve
Using keyboard-interactive authentication.
Password:

The programs included with the Debian GNU/Linux system are free

Unable to cd to "/home/steve"
But the 'steve' account exists, is a member of the 'steve' group, uses
/bin/bash as a shell and in /home this exists:
drwxr-xr-x 1 steve steve 2048 Aug 27 07:02 steve/
FWIW, the same error occurs if I try to log in as 'steve' on the
serial console, so it appears that the login process itself is the one
having issues...
Any ideas what is set up wrong on this thing and even more important,
instructions on how to fix it?
