I should mention that I figured out the issue.  The SPI framework is
really lacking as far as examples :)  What I had to do was replace the
modalias in a file under arch/ of the modalias for tmp124 with
"spidev" instead of "tmp124", and then the tmp124 device loads the
spidev driver instead.

I didn't understand that the master driver doesn't hook into the
spidev without an actual device in the spi_board_info to control.

Very confusing...
