Don't know if this helps or not... Though I'm not doing Java development, I'm doing something perhaps more obscure -- .NET / C# via Mono. And I'm happy to report that Mono (1.9) is able to use the serial ports w/o issue on the 7800. Watch for this though: Both ttyS1 and ttyS2 are being used by default for stdout redirect. So they're already opened when you boot up. You can change this behavior via: edit: /etc/inittab comment out the line: T1:23:respawn:/sbin/getty -L ttyS1 115200 vt100 Do the above, OR use ttts4 and the com3 header instead. Interestingly enough, in linux more than one app can open the same port (as long as its not opened w/ a lock) and I had the darndest time figuring out what the issue was until I realized what was going on.
