Don't know if this helps or not...
Though I'm not doing Java development, I'm doing something perhaps more obscure -- .NET / C#  via Mono.
And I'm happy to report that Mono (1.9) is able to use the serial ports w/o issue on the 7800.

Watch for this though:
Both ttyS1 and ttyS2 are being used by default for stdout redirect.  So they're already opened when you boot up.

You can change this behavior via:
edit:
   /etc/inittab
comment out the line:
   T1:23:respawn:/sbin/getty -L ttyS1 115200 vt100

Do the above, OR use ttts4 and the com3 header instead.

Interestingly enough, in linux more than one app can open the same port (as long as its not opened w/ a lock) and I had the darndest time figuring out what the issue was until I realized what was going on.

Hope that helps.

Eric

Hi,
I would be more than happy if you would share the binaries. The plan is
to run tomcat as an appserver on the 7800.
