I don't know the layout of your filesystems, and you don't say where you 
were setting up the directories and saving the files!

If you were doing under the /tmp directory, then check that the /tmp 
directory is mounted as a ramfs/tmpfs or similar. These filesystems are in 
RAM and disappear when the machine is rebooted. Check the output of
the "df" command, or do  "cat /proc/mounts" to check which part of the file 
structure is stored where.
