Since I keep failing to comprehend the cross-compile stuff (what little documentation I've managed to stumble over is inadequate for the way my brain works), I tried option two.

I had no problem creating an NFS server and sharing a kernel source directory.  I had no problem mounting said directory on several other linux boxes.  Sadly, the TS-7800 is not among them.  All I ever get from the TS-7800's mount command is a very long delay, and then

mount: mounting 192.168.0.158:/home/ts7800/source on /usr/src/linux failed: Input/output error

I've tried mounting at several different locations, including a directory I created in the root just to test, always with the same result.  I did notice that /usr/src is mounted read-only, so I don't know if I'd be allowed to mount at /usr/src/linux (as I'd like to do), but I need to get the TS-7800 to mount it anywhere before I worry about that.
