Be sure it will work. There are plenty of code samples for driving a 
Matrix Keyboard for almost any kind of micros. Also for RS232. Choose 
whatever makes you feel more comfortable. For this application, if 
they have enough I/O pines, they are all the same.

And for RS232, 10feet of cable are easy cake. I use to drive cables 
up to 15 feet at 115200bps with no problems.
