Is your code failing after the 'open'?  Try commenting out these two lines in /etc/inittab and rebooting.

    T1:23:respawn:/sbin/getty -L ttyS1 115200 vt100
    1:2345:respawn:/sbin/getty 38400 tty1

I had a problem connecting my own program to ttyS1 as getty was holding onto the port.  After getting rid of getty, everything worked.

...still thinking about your problem with ttts4 and ttts5.  I'm using ttts4 with no problem.  The only thing in common between the those two is that they're on the COM3 header.
