After looking into /linuxrc-sdroot, I see it actually tries to load a 
new kernel and initrd from the first partition on the SD, using the 
files /initrd, /kernel and /cmdline (and the initrd should probably 
use second partition as root). So to use that script you have to 
setup your SD card properly. That way the initial system acts like a 
bootloader that loads the real system.
But if you don't bother setting it up, you can of course use a copy 
of /linuxrc-fastboot and modify it to enter the root fs directly 
(just remove the block above "killall busybox").
