*BOGO*mips....as in bogus.  An emphasis of 
Meaningless-Instructions-Per-Second.  It's nothing but a timing loop that the 
kernel uses for scheduling if I remember correctly.

I vaguely recall somewhere in the middle of the 2.6 series things halved...or 
doubled...or something.
