Running 'cat' and 'echo' are about as simple as you can get, but you'll want
to make sure all your termios are set up correctly first, as one wrong
termios parameter can cause communications to fail in strange ways. It
sometimes seems termios defaults are pretty much "random", or at least they
can vary from machine to machine and distro to distro.
