Thank you all for your comments and the helpful links.  I have
modified my application to eliminate the frequent file creation and
writes of serialized data to the SD card, I can live without it.

I'm considering conversion from an TS-7260 to a TS-7800 as the latter
has sufficient on-board flash for a Debian filesystem and which is
claimed to be much more tolerant to power loss during writes than ext2
or ext3.

I'll would also consider a USB drive as my storage medium for the file
system a suggested, but I had thought they were the same storage
technology, just different form factors?
