A general strategy to reduce the risk is to create files beforehand suitably large to contain your data. The files can contain zeros - or some other pattern that you can distinguish from your data. This ensures no block allocation is needed when you write your data. Also specify noatime when you mount the file system so no writes are done to inodes to update file access times. It might be better to bite-the-bullet and find out what it is really happening. Andrew |
