Hi

I and a friend of mine am trying to run a GUI based system on my
TS7300. For the same we are trying to install icewm as the windows
manager and the xserver-xfree86 as the X system. We have followed
instructions for the same from various places and have done:

# apt-get update

# apt-get install icewm

# apt-get install xserver-xfree86

# apt-get install x-window-system-core

# apt-get install xdm

# apt-get install numlockx

# apt-get install xterm

After we installed these packages, we restarted the system hoping to
see a GUI log in, but that failed to materialize. Xdm was unable to
start and gave up after 5 unsuccessful attempts. Then, we tried to
manually start it by running startx command which culminated with the
following error:

FATAL ERROR: NO SCREENS FOUND.

2) Next we tried to manually edit configuration file
/etc/X11/xf86config-4 by looking up examples of the similar errors
over the net. We changed the name of Video card monitor to 'Generic'
one. We also set the screen name to Default screen but to no avail.
We also tried to reconfigure the Xserver-xfree86 by using command
dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 but the error remained.

3) Next we tried the command xf86config as part of a fresh attempt to
configure xsystem but this created the xf86config file which we had to
rename to xf86config-4 - the file that startx was utilizing to run the
xsystem. Even this new file didn't have the desired effect. Still No luck.

4) We also changed the monitor and reconfigured the xserver-xfree86 by
giving suitable h-synch and v-synch values for the monitor by
referring its manual. Still no success :(

5) After more searching, we found that may be we need to change video
card driver to vesa instead of vga (as it being generic one) but no
such option was available under xfree86 configuration.

6) Next we tried to find out more about video rendering device on the
board. We found that the board had an 8MB dedicated video memory, The
video rendering was done by FPGA onboard which had the proprietary IP
core - TS_VIDCORE of Technologic Systems. We found certain scripts
on the ftp server of the embeddedarm site which would allow us to get
the required modules to run on our system and get a video output, but
the script failed to make an impact despite ensuring( by adding few
required files to our file system) that support for debian was
available on the scripts.

7) We also tried xdmconfig command but all in vain. Error is still there.

I have seen a very similar post on this group
(http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/ts-7000/message/9925) and also the
reply to the same but we have a memory constraint of 512MB and so, we
cant try and upgrade the debian version to etch. Could you suggest
something?

Thank you in anticipation.

Regards
Jaspreet Singh
