Thanks , I had not thought of using portage but my initial attempts 
to cross-compile on Gentoo floundered because there seems to be too 
much difference between my 2.6.20 gcc-4.2 Gentoo and the rather 
neolithic Debs 3.1 that all the TS stuff is based on.

I initially looked into Gentoo since that's my main OS but embedded 
gentoo looked to be rather dead in the water for the last couple of 
years. It seemed better to stick closer to the TS set up at this 
stage.

Although eventually I would like to build 2.6.23 eabi for the ARM my 
initial requirement is the shortest path to a working image. 

I figured a clean partition with std Debain 3.1 and gcc 3.x compiler 
would be a safer start.
