Is a zero on the left of a number an octal indicator for other
commands' parameters too?
For grins I tried "/sbin/ifconfig eth0 192.168.000.051" so I know
you're exactly right so the following is just to learn more...
I checked the man page for ifconfig and it doesn't specifically say
octal will be used if you have a leading zero. Would you know if there
is there an assumption in *nix documentation that when specifying
addresses a leading zero would make it octal?
