That's exaclty the output when listing with "ls -F". Note that only
the executable files are marked with the asterix. You can try using
"ls -l --file-type" to override the trailing * behavior (have a look
at ls's man page for more information).

PS: I tried to re-order the posts... please don't top post, it's
getting difficult to follow.
