I am still in a learning phase of this, but I believe I created an SD card following the instructions at:
Using the sdimage.dd.bz2 image will completely overwrite the card and make the appropriate partitions. You only need to modify the partition 3 if your card is over 256 MB. I believe 1GB may be the largest size you can use starting from the SD image due to cluster size differences.
