It sounds like you have the best of both worlds. Use apt-get or aptitude to install everything on your hard drive. That makes it quick and easy to get it configured and up. Once you have it figured out you can put just the pieces you need for your application on the TS file system.

Thanks Bob.  I didn’t get the CF option, but I have Debian on the USB drive.  I was hoping to use TS-Linux so I didn’t have to worry about the vibration (or falling out of the port) issues with the USB, since it will be in a vehicle.  Future versions could use the CF or SD option.  Anybody know if TS-Linux will work?  I’ll be attempting it soon unless advised otherwise.

Side question:  If I go to Debian on the USB, can I then use most of the onboard flash?

I have sqlite3 + php5 + apache2 running on a ts7200. I have only had it
running for few days but so far everything is working. I'm using the Debian
CF, not TS-Linux.

If you do use PHP, you should look at the ADOdb database abstraction library

(http://adodb.sourceforge.net/). It lets you write PHP code that can use
different database engines by just changing a configuration setting.

Do you want to run the database application on the board or will your board
access a database server via a network connection?

If you want to do all the database work on the TS board, using MySQL might
not
be the best choice. It might be a bit big to fit in the amount of resources
available on your TS board. For something like simple data logging, you may
be
better off looking at something like sqlite (http://www.sqlite.org/).
