Hi --

For max speed, you need to use Phil's kernel driver.

Using it, Phil reported in:
http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/ts-7000/message/2085
that he easily could do 22 ksamples/sec, 3% CPU.  44k may be 
possible.

The MAX197 chip itself is capable of 100 ksamples/sec, if the rest 
of the system can keep up.

A big factor will be how long you need to take data at high speeds, 
and where's it going.
