That makes sense, thanks. Just in case anyone's interested, here is
the EXACT message that comes out:
Checking root file system...
fsck 1.40-WIP (14-Nov-2006)
e2fsck 1.40-WIP (14-Nov-2006)
ts-dev has gone 49710 days without being checked, check forced.
Pass 1: Checking inodes, blocks, and sizes
Using a year as 365.25 days, that's over 136 years ago, so
substantially BEFORE 1969. Probably a calculation bug in e2fsck or
something.

Thanks again, those will be useful commands to add to my notebook.
Hmmm... I seem to misunderstand. tune2fs is not available on the
TS-7520's onboard system, and when I try to run it from within the
USB's environment (which doesn't sound right anyway) using the name
that 'df' shows for the device name, I'm told that tune2fs cannot find
a valid filesystem superblock. Oh well, it sounded good. Thanks anyway.
